Lectionary Theme: Senior Citizen Sunday Day of St. Mathew Senior citizens: Models of God’s Righteousness Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

  •

    30. You shall keep my sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.

    31. Do not turn to mediums or wizards; do not seek them out, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.

    32. You shall rise before the aged, and defer to the old; and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

    33. When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien.

    34. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

    35. You shall not cheat in measuring length, weight, or quantity.

    36. You shall have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

    37. You shall keep all my statutes and all my ordinances, and observe them: I am the Lord.

    1. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

    2. “Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise:

    3. “so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

    4. And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Slaves and Masters

    5. Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ;

    6. not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

    7. Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women,

    8. knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord, whether we are slaves or free.

    9. And, masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Master in heaven, and with him there is no partiality. The Whole Armor of God

    7. for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it;

    8. but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.

    9. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

    10. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. The Good Fight of Faith

    11. But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.

    12. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

    25. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him.

    26. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.

    27. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law,

    28. Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

    29. “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word;

    30. for my eyes have seen your salvation,

    31. which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

    32. a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

    33. And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him.

    34. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed

    35. so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

    36. There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,

    37. then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day.

    38. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth
