Isaiah 11:1-10 First Lesson
1. A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
2. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see or decide by what his ears hear,
4. but with righteousness he shall judge for the poor and decide with equity for the oppressed of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
6. The wolf shall live with the lamb; the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the lion will feed together, and a little child shall lead them.
7. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.
9. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
10. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

Acts 3:19-26 Second Lesson
19. Repent, therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out,
20. so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the Messiah appointed for you, that is, Jesus,
21. who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through his holy prophets.
22. Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you from your own people a prophet like me. You must listen to whatever he tells you.
23. And it will be that everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be utterly rooted out of the people.’
24. And all the prophets, as many as have spoken, from Samuel and those after him, also predicted these days.
25. You are the descendants of the prophets and of the covenant that God gave to your ancestors, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your descendants all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’
26. When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

John 1:9-18 Gospel
9. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
10. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him.
11. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.
12. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,
13. who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
14. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.
15. (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ ”)
16. From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
17. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18. No one has ever seen God. It is the only Son, himself God, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.
