Lectionary Theme: Republic Day: Christian witness in the public sphere

    18. Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord! Why do you want the day of the Lord? It is darkness, not light;

    19. as if someone fled from a lion, and was met by a bear; or went into the house and rested a hand against the wall, and was bitten by a snake.

    20. Is not the day of the Lord darkness, not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?

    21. I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

    22. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals I will not look upon.

    23. Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps.

    24. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

    25. Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

    26. You shall take up Sakkuth your king, and Kaiwan your star-god, your images, which you made for yourselves;

    27. therefore I will take you into exile beyond Damascus, says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.

    14. But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated,

    15. but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you,

    16. yet do it with gentleness and respect. Maintain a good conscience so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

    17. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil.

    18. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

    2. Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving.

    3. At the same time pray for us as well that God will open to us a door for the word, that we may declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison,

    4. so that I may reveal it clearly, as I should.

    5. Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time.

    6. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Final Greetings and Benediction

    7. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

    8. Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

    9. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

    10. And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?”

    11. In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”

    12. Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?”

    13. He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.”

    14. Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”
